Friends of the late Al Utton, the University of New Mexico Law School, and New Mexico’s water and natural resource management community gathered at the Law School Sept. 19 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Utton Transboundary Resources Center. Special guests included Mary Utton (Al’s widow) and John Utton (Al’s son) a water law attorney in Santa Fe as well as former Utton Center Directors Marilyn O’Leary and Susan Kelly. Tanya Trujillo, Deputy State Engineer and Governor’s water policy adviser for the State of New, also joined the celebration.

Utton, internationally known for his work on transnational resource collaboration, founded the International Transboundary Resources Center. It was renamed the Utton Transboundary Resources Center in his honor at the August 10th, 1999 UNM Board of Regents meeting. Over the years, the Utton Center has prided itself on continuing Al Utton's legacy through projects that promote the equitable and sustainable management of transboundary resources. Utton was famous for his diplomacy and charisma, which helped him create strong relationships to solve challenging water issues both locally and internationally.
