March 4, 2024

The Utton Center was proud to host Tanya Trujillo as a guest speaker for two events; our Divining the Path to a Water Lawyer's Dream Job Lunch and Learn, and the Navigating Challenges in Complex River Systems in the Era of Climate Change CLE.

Tanya Trujillo, a native New Mexican, is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Iowa College of Law. An expert in water law and natural resource policy, she has served as general counsel for the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission, as counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M. She also served as executive director of the Colorado River Board of California and as project director for the Colorado River Sustainability Campaign. From 2021 to 2023, she was the Biden Administration's Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Water and Science.

Students at our Lunch and Learn had a chance to ask Tanya questions about her career, insights, and philosophies as a water lawyer. At the CLE Tanya shared her optimism about water management in New Mexico and the West, and how happy she was to be back and working at home again.
