Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of New Mexico's Middle Rio Grande

The deep interconnections between agriculture, urban, and environmental uses of water are deeply entwined in the history of water management in New Mexico's Middle Rio Grande, Utton Center Director Adrian Oglesby and Writer in Residence John Fleck, with a group of New Mexico water experts, write in an article in the May 2024 issue of the Water Report. Those interconnections have allowed communities to flourish, but it also has left them vulnerable to the effects of climate change as the Rio Grande shrinks. The article highlights innovative and collaborative efforts to manage the future of the complex and interconnected agricultural-urban ecological system, as water managers work to build a more resilient future for the valley.
